Clément Janequin paints a poignant picture of lost favour in this four-part French chanson. The singer recalls a time when they were desired, cherished, and respected, their actions and words met with universal acclaim. But now, a harsh reversal of fortune has occurred; the singer is met with rejection, the cold words "Nescio vos" – "I know you not" – spoken at the door. Janequin's music masterfully captures this shift from past esteem to present desolation, creating a striking expression of unrequited affection and social isolation for STTB voices.
