Janitor coeli by Diego Ortiz — Lyrics

1. Aurea luce et decore roseo, Lux lucis, omne perfudisti saeculum: decorans caelos inclito martyrio. Hac sacra die, quae dat reis veniam. 2. Janitor caeli, doctor orbis pariter, Judices saecli, vera mundi lumina: Per crucem alter, alter ense triumphans, Vitae senatum laureati possident. 3. About Janitor coeli

This sacred setting in Latin for SATB voices draws its text from a hymn honouring Saints Peter and Paul, the "Gatekeeper of Heaven" and the "Doctor of the world". The text opens by praising the light and glory associated with these apostles, and their martyrdom. It then addresses Peter as the "good Shepherd", asking him to accept prayers and dissolve the bonds of sin, referencing the power given to him to open and close heaven. The hymn continues to address Paul, asking him to instruct in morals and guide minds towards heaven. Diego Ortiz's composition would have been conceived for liturgical use within the Roman Office.
