About Jacobi
Andreas Raselius's Jacobi sets a dramatic biblical scene, likely intended for a Lenten or Passiontide context. The text, taken from the Gospel of Matthew, recounts the mother of James and John asking Jesus to grant her sons prominent positions in his kingdom. Jesus responds by questioning if they can drink his cup and be baptized with his baptism, to which they affirm. He concedes they will share his cup and baptism, but the granting of places at his right and left is not his to give. This motet is written for two distinct choirs, SSAB and ATTB, offering rich contrapuntal and antiphonal possibilities. The German text allows for clear declamation, bringing the human drama of the disciples' ambition and Jesus's profound response to life.
