About IZOBO

"Izobo" is a reverent and rhythmic Offertory hymn composed by Edwin Adomhokhai for the St. Patrick Catholic Chaplaincy Choir at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. Sung in the Esan language, the title translates to "Offering" or "Sacrifice," perfectly capturing the moment the congregation brings their gifts to the altar.

The lyrics guide the choir and the faithful through the Eucharistic preparation. As the voices rise with the words "Mha mue eka bia yon re" (We bring bread and wine) and "mha kpe ko to, Ose!" (we kneel down, Lord!), the music creates a deep sense of humility and devotion. The harmonies are carefully structured to support this solemn procession, allowing the meaning of the words to shine through.

Singing this piece during Mass brings a profound local resonance to the liturgy. As noted by the composer's own English translation at the end of the score, the ultimate prayer of this offering is "that there may be peace in our hearts, that there may be peace on earth"—a beautiful intention to carry into the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
