About Iya Mimọ
"Iya Mimọ" is a vibrant Yoruba choral anthem dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The title translates to "Holy Mother," and the piece radiates a deep, joyful affection for the Mother of Jesus Christ. From the opening notes, the choir honors her as "Ayaba mimọ" (Holy Queen), singing with a warmth that reflects the strong Marian devotion found in Nigerian Catholic parishes.
The heart of the song lies in its reassuring message of maternal love. The lyrics remind the congregation that Mary is a mother who truly loves her children ("Iya to fẹran awa ọmọ rẹ"). This devotion reaches a joyful peak in the lively call-and-response section. A soloist or bass section playfully challenges the listener, asking, "Ta lo sọ pe a o ni mama o?" (Who says we have no mother?), to which the full choir triumphantly responds, "Bẹẹni, Maria, a ni mama o" (Yes, Mary, we have a mother).
Daniel Ebhomien’s arrangement captures the rhythmic energy and communal spirit of Nigerian worship. It is a wonderful piece for Marian feast days, Mothering Sunday, or any moment in the liturgy where the choir wants to lift up a spirited, culturally rich song of praise to Our Lady. The intertwining harmonies and upbeat tempo make it a joy to sing and an uplifting experience for the whole church.
