ITE MISSA EST by Okwy Tony Umeh (Rev. Fr.) — Lyrics
About ITE MISSA EST
"Ite Missa Est" takes the traditional Latin dismissal of the Mass and expands it into a bright, rhythmic recessional. Composed by Fr. Tony Umeh, the piece captures the joy of a congregation that has just celebrated the Eucharist and is now being sent forth. The familiar exchange—"Go, the Mass is ended" and the response "Deo gratias" (Thanks be to God)—becomes a lively chorus that carries the choir and the people out of the church doors.
The verses draw on the Psalms to express deep gratitude and trust, singing "Celebrabo te Domine" (I will praise you, Lord) and "Conserva me" (Preserve me). Because of its clear, marching tempo and themes of thanksgiving, choirs often use this as a Recessional or Dismissal hymn. It gives the end of the liturgy a feeling of triumphant departure, sending everyone home with an "Alleluia" on their lips.
