Indigenous Medley by David Irobonosen — Lyrics
About Indigenous Medley
The "Indigenous Medley" is a vibrant choral arrangement by David Irobonosen, originally scored for the SPCC Choir at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma. It brings together beloved traditional choruses from across the Mid-Western and Southern regions of Nigeria, moving fluidly through Edo, Esan, Urhobo, and Igbo dialects. The piece highlights the diverse voices of the Nigerian church, uniting them into a single, joyful expression of faith.
Choirs often use medleys like this during festive concerts, cultural days, or extended thanksgiving processions where the congregation dances forward to bring their gifts to the altar. The music opens with bright Edo and Esan greetings to Mary ("Mha tue Maria") and praises to God ("Osa se na ga"), before transitioning into the highly energetic Urhobo thanksgiving chorus "Vwa kpevwe koro vwon."
Singing this medley brings a deep sense of cultural pride and unity to the choir loft. By blending these distinct indigenous melodies into one continuous flow of praise, the arrangement allows singers and congregants from different backgrounds to celebrate their faith in their mother tongues. The journey culminates in a resounding, unified "Ise o" (Amen), sealing the community's prayer.
