About In monte Oliveti
Orlando di Lasso, a prolific composer of the late Renaissance, wrote this motet for SAATBB voices. Set in Latin, In monte Oliveti is a Tenebrae responsory, a genre of sacred music used during the Maundy Thursday liturgy. The text draws from the Gospel accounts of Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. It opens with Jesus praying to his Father, asking for the cup of suffering to pass, acknowledging the spirit's readiness but the flesh's weakness, and submitting to God's will. The excerpt concludes with Christ’s admonition to his disciples to watch and pray, lest they fall into temptation, a plea that resonates through the ages.
