William Byrd's motet In manus tuas sets words from Psalm 31, a poignant prayer for God's protection and redemption. The Latin text translates to 'Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.' Byrd's setting for AATB voices is a devotional contemplation of faith and trust in the divine. The added invocation 'Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis' ('Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us') brings a Marian dimension to the plea, reflecting a common practice in sacred music of the period and intensifying the devotional character of the work.
