Bartholomeus Gesius's setting of the popular medieval carol In dulci jubilo is a joyful celebration of the Nativity. The text, a mix of Latin and German, expresses the delight of the Virgin Mary cradling her baby Jesus, seeing him as the source of all light and hope. The second verse addresses Jesus directly in German, pleading for comfort. The piece moves through reflections on divine love and redemption, contrasting human sin with the gift of heavenly joy.
