In der Marienkirche by Carl Loewe — Lyrics
In der Marienkirche begruben sie ihn, und sie im Marienchor;
aus ihrem Grab ein Rotröselein sproßt, aus seinem ein Weißdorn hervor.

About In der Marienkirche
Carl Loewe, a master of the German Lied, composed this evocative SATB setting of In der Marienkirche. The German text, set within the tradition of sacred Lieder, tells a poignant story of two lovers buried side by side in a church. From their graves, a red rose and a hawthorn bush grow, their branches intertwining as if reaching for each other. This imagery powerfully conveys their enduring love, even in death, allowing all who witness it to understand that two devoted souls rest there.
