About Im Wald (Preciosa)
Carl Maria von Weber's Im Wald offers a vivid evocation of woodland life and camaraderie. Set for SATB choir, this German secular part-song opens with a depiction of the forest, its fresh greenness and echoing sounds, soon joined by the cheerful call of horns. The mood shifts with the arrival of night, described as pitch-black and accompanied by the rustling of wolves and the unwelcome barking of dogs, creating a sense of unease. Yet, the music soon returns to a more carefree spirit, proclaiming the world as a tent and celebrating the joy of wandering and singing through diverse landscapes. The interplay of voices captures the changing atmosphere, from the lively calls to the more hushed anticipation of the night and the expansive calls of the journey.
