Orlando di Lasso’s Im Land zu Wirtenberg is a lively secular German Lieder for SAATB choir. Its texture is engaging, with imitative entries and playful rhythmic interplay that captures the spirit of the text. The song tells a humorous story about a vineyard owner complaining that a donkey drank his wine. The judge points out that the donkey cannot pay as it is not compensated for its work. Lasso’s setting uses the polyphonic traditions of the Renaissance to bring this amusing anecdote vividly to life, with each voice part contributing to the overall gaiety and narrative drive. It is a delightful example of late Renaissance part-music.
