About Il Romeo
Barbara Strozzi's Il Romeo is a secular aria for solo voice in Italian. The text tells the poignant story of a heart, likened to a beggar, wandering through the kingdom of love, desperately seeking pity and aid for its unhappy life. Despite its sincere faith, it finds no mercy, abandoned, betrayed, and wished dead by those it loved. The weary traveler returns without having found compassionate favour for its miserable state. The words lament the apparent absence of feminine kindness, suggesting that every beautiful woman has become obdurate, ignoring, disregarding, and finally dismissing the heart's plea, leaving it in peace but utterly unheeded.
