This setting of a sacred Italian lauda for SAB and STT voices begins with music that reflects the profound sorrow of the text. The interplay of the parts evokes the dialogue between the grieving Virgin Mary and her dying son on the cross. The music directly portrays the lament of Mary, who cries out her desire to die with Jesus and to hang with him upon the wood, expressing the intense pain of their shared suffering. This anonymous work offers a poignant musical meditation on the Mater Dolorosa and the crucifixion.
