Il Martellato

Giovanni Gastoldi's Il Martellato is a secular Italian madrigal for SSATB voices. The music opens with a lively, imitative texture, reflecting the text's assertive and somewhat argumentative tone. The composer employs clear, syllabic declamation, characteristic of the genre, allowing the text's sentiments to come through with directness. The lyrics express a plea to a scornful lover, lamenting unrequited affection and vowing that such disdain will not go unpunished by Cupid. The repeated "fa la la la la" refrains add a rhythmic, almost dance-like quality, contrasting with the direct expression of pain and eventual threat of divine retribution.
