About Il ladro ch'a la strada
Luca Marenzio was a celebrated composer of madrigals in late 16th-century Italy. This secular work, set for three female voices (SSB), is a fine example of the genre. The Italian text depicts a thief who robs travellers in the woods and lives in constant fear, contrasting him with a cruel lady who steals hearts and kills with her eyes. The poet implores Love to either punish her or make her beauty less lethal. Marenzio's music would have vividly portrayed the contrast between the fearful thief and the destructive power of the lady's gaze.
