About Il giovane pastore
Il giovane pastore paints a vivid scene of a young shepherd choosing between three goddesses, enflamed by love. He selects one, deemed most beautiful, but the text then pivots to praise for a dignitary of Este, to whom three goddesses now grant victory and place a crown upon his head, suggesting his glory surpasses any woven on Mount Helicon. This secular Italian madrigal for SSSTB voices captures the spirit of Renaissance part-music, weaving a narrative of divine favour and earthly acclaim. The rich five-part texture allows for expressive harmonic interplay as the poem unfolds, moving from pastoral allegory to courtly adulation.
