Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen, BWV 48 by Johann Sebastian Bach — Lyrics

3. Solls ja so sein, Dass Straf und Pein Auf Sünde folgen müssen, So fahr hie fort Und schone dort Und lass mich hie wohl büßen.

About Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen, BWV 48

This powerful opening movement from Bach's cantata BWV 48 immediately plunges the listener into a profound lament. The SATB choir grapples with the text's central question, 'Unhappy man, who will deliver me from the body of this death?', painting a vivid picture of spiritual anguish and the inescapable grip of sin. Bach's music mirrors this torment with dense, contrapuntal textures, where the voices weave together in a complex, almost suffocating embrace. The German text speaks of pain, misery, and the venom of sin raging within, transforming the world into a place of sickness and death. The movement conveys a desperate plea for divine intervention, wrestling with the consequences of sin and the need for repentance, even if it means enduring suffering in this life to find salvation in the next.
