About Ich brach drei dürre Reiselein
Hugo Distler’s Ich brach drei dürre Reiselein is a four-part setting for mixed choir of a German carol. The text tells the story of three barren twigs broken from a hazel bush on St. Barbara's day, shortly before Christmas. Miraculously, two twigs bloom, and on Christmas night, the third twig bursts into flower, igniting the heart. The carol concludes with a reflection that just as God makes the barren twigs flourish, so too our lives may grow and thrive under His care. Distler’s music often explores a vivid, direct expression of text, making this a powerful choice for Advent or Christmas programming.
