Ibant apostoli

This impressive motet by Jacob Handl is suitable for services during the Easter season, particularly for feasts of Apostles. The text, sung in Latin, recounts the apostles leaving the council rejoicing, deemed worthy to suffer dishonour for the name of Jesus. Handl’s setting for double choir (ATTB.ATTB) creates a rich and sonorous sound, with the two choirs interacting and responding to each other. The music reflects the joy and conviction of the apostles, building in intensity and power to a triumphant conclusion. It is a challenging but rewarding work for an accomplished choir, offering a profound musical expression of faith and steadfastness.
