Jennifer Bastable's I Will Sing of the Lord unfolds with a rich SSATB texture, drawing its text from Psalm 13, a deeply personal and often anguished plea. The Latin opening of the psalm speaks of abandonment and despair, asking "How long, O Lord, wilt thou forget me for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?" The composer sets this text with a profound sense of earnestness, moving from a pleading tone to one of ultimate hope and praise. The English translation reflects this journey, culminating in the joyful declaration "I will sing unto the Lord, who hath dealt bountifully with me; yea, I will praise the name of the Lord most high."
