I' vo piangendo by Alfonso Fontanelli — Lyrics
I' vo piangendo i miei passati tempi
i quai posi in amar cosa mortale,
senza levarmi a volo, abbiend'io l'ale,
per dar forse di me non bassi esempi.
Tu che vedi i miei mali indegni et empi,
Re del cielo invisibile immortale,
soccorri a l'alma disviata e frale,
e 'l suo defecto di tua gratia adempi.

About I' vo piangendo
Alfonso Fontanelli’s I’ vo piangendo is a highly expressive Italian madrigal for SAATB voices. The music unfolds with intricate part-writing, imitative textures, and moments of homophonic declamation that powerfully convey the poignant text. The composer uses a rich palette of harmonic color and dynamic contrast to illustrate the penitential sentiments of the lyrics. The singer is filled with regret for wasted time spent on earthly love, and appeals to the King of Heaven for succour. He longs for peace in death, having lived a life of storm and strife. This work demands skilled ensemble singing to bring its dramatic and spiritual journey to life.
