About I' vidi in terra angelici costumi
Adrian Willaert paints a vivid, dreamlike scene of angelic customs and celestial beauty on earth, so sublime that the poet recalls it with mingled joy and sorrow. The poet describes seeing two beautiful eyes weeping, and hearing words that could move mountains and stop rivers. The five voice parts (SAATTB, ATTTBB) contribute to a rich sound. The Italian text speaks of love, wisdom, valor, pity, and sorrow creating a sweeter harmony than any heard before, with the heavens so attentive that not a leaf stirred, the air and wind filled with such sweetness.
