Hymnen op.107 by Josef Rheinberger — Lyrics
About Hymnen op.107
Salvete flores Martyrum, the opening words, address the "blooming flowers of martyrs", painting a vivid scene of innocence sacrificed in Christ's service. The text, in Latin, continues to describe these young victims, likened to tender roses, playing with palms and crowns before the altar. This sacred motet for SATB voices by Josef Rheinberger draws on this imagery of early Christian martyrdom. The text's final section offers praise to Jesus, born of the Virgin, alongside the Father and the Holy Spirit, for all eternity. Rheinberger's setting masterfully conveys the devotion and solemnity inherent in the text.
