How Excellent

"How Excellent" is a majestic choral anthem that draws its text directly from the comforting words of Psalm 36. It opens with a sweeping declaration of God’s loving kindness, inviting the choir to proclaim the boundless nature of divine grace. As the piece unfolds, the lyrics remind us of the ultimate refuge we have, painting a reassuring picture of the children of men putting their trust under the shadow of God's wings.

In the middle section, the music shifts to a joyful, cascading rhythm as the voices sing of being "abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Thine house." This part of the anthem is especially moving during the Offertory or as a special thanksgiving piece, as it speaks to the spiritual nourishment and the "river of pleasures" that come from dwelling in God's presence. The overlapping vocal entries here give the choir a chance to build a bright, energetic sound before returning to the grand opening theme.

Singing this anthem requires a good balance between the broad, reverent phrases of the opening and the more rhythmic middle section. It is a wonderful choice for festive Sunday Masses or choir anniversaries, leaving the congregation with a profound sense of God's enduring goodness and protection.
