Horsù note dolenti

Scipione Dentice's Horsù note dolenti is a secular madrigal for SATTB voices. The music opens with a dense, imitative texture that gradually thins, allowing the text to emerge with clarity. The Italian lyrics express profound sorrow and lamentation, describing how the singer's complaints, long cast to the winds, must now cease. The text speaks of a wild beauty that scorns the love of a gentle suitor, and resolves to narrate the singer's death, his unfeeling ways, and his cruel fate. Dentice's setting captures the emotional intensity of the words through rich harmonic language and expressive melodic lines, creating a poignant musical statement.
