Holberg Cantata by Edvard Grieg — Lyrics

Mindernes kor Gjennem Luften følger Festtogets spor.

About Holberg Cantata

This cantata for TTBB voices, with Norwegian lyrics, paints a vivid picture of Norway's historical and natural landscape. The text opens by invoking the ancestral land and the passage of generations, leading to a celebration of Bergen's past glories and the triumph of greatness over adversity. It recounts historical events, weaving together tales of kings and national spirit. The music reflects a sense of pride and nostalgia, acknowledging both periods of hardship and moments of inspiration. The composer captures a dual vision of spring, one born of love and the other of genius, suggesting a land that flourishes through both emotional connection and intellectual achievement. The cantata culminates with a reflection on the enduring legacy of heroes and the luminous, almost celestial, quality of great minds illuminated by the northern lights.
