Andrea Gabrieli's Hodie Simon Petrus is a sacred motet for SATT choir. The composer crafts a rich, polyphonic texture that allows each voice to shine. The Latin text commemorates the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul. It speaks of Peter ascending the cross and Paul, the 'light of the world,' receiving his crown of martyrdom for Christ's name. The alleluias provide moments of exultant praise within the solemn narrative.
