Hodie Maria Virgo by Luca Marenzio — Lyrics
About Hodie Maria Virgo
Luca Marenzio’s Hodie Maria Virgo for SATB choir opens with a flowing, imitative texture, gradually building in sonority as the voices enter. The Latin text, a Marian antiphon, celebrates the Ascension of the Virgin Mary into heaven. The music reflects the joy of the text, particularly in the jubilant acclamation ‘gaudete, quia cum Christo regnat in aeternum’ (‘rejoice, because she reigns with Christ eternally’). Marenzio’s masterful handling of vocal lines creates a rich, polyphonic sound world that is both expressive and engaging for choirs.
