Opening the door to glory, this motet by Christoph Willibald Gluck is a powerful setting of sacred text. The Latin psalm proclaims the dominion of God over all the earth and asks who shall ascend the holy mount. It calls for a worthy heart and clean hands to receive God's blessing. The text then shifts, with a commanding call to raise the gates and let the King of Glory enter, before posing the question of his identity and answering with the Lord, mighty and powerful. Sung by SATB choir, this motet is suitable for liturgical occasions when themes of divine power and ultimate sovereignty are to be proclaimed.
