Hoc est praeceptum meum by Dominique Phinot — Lyrics
About Hoc est praeceptum meum
Dominique Phinot's Hoc est praeceptum meum is a sacred motet for SATTB choir. The five-part texture is treated with a high degree of independence between the voices, creating intricate polyphonic lines. The Latin text, drawn from the Gospel of John, speaks of Christ's commandment to love one another, as he loved us. The music rises to the declaration that no one has greater love than to lay down one's life for friends, and then returns to the intimacy of friendship when Christ calls his disciples by that name, sharing all that he has heard from the Father. Phinot’s masterful handling of the vocal parts reflects the profound message of divine and human love.
