About Hispanum ad caenam
Orlando di Lasso depicts a humorous encounter between a Spanish guest and a Flemish merchant. The merchant hosts a lavish banquet, and the Spanish guest expresses surprise at the wealth and artistry on display, questioning where such ingenuity comes from while the men of the region sleep drunkenly. The Flemish host replies with a witty retort: while they drink the wine shipped from Spain, the Spanish drink water. He suggests their lack of ingenuity is no wonder, as even their donkeys drink the same water. This Latin motet is scored for SAATB voices and captures a lively, secular scene with a sharp, humorous dialogue.
