About Hashkivenu - make us lie down
Salamone Rossi, a significant composer of the early Baroque period, draws on Jewish tradition in this sacred Hebrew setting. Hashkivenu, a prayer for peaceful rest and protection, is here arranged for a large choir of SAT TBB, AATTB. The text asks God to lay us down in peace, to make us rise again in life and peace, and to spread over us the shelter of His peace. It continues with pleas for protection from enemies, pestilence, war, famine, sorrow, and sudden disaster, seeking divine guidance and salvation. The music would suit a choir looking for a substantial and devotional work in a rich, polyphonic texture.
