About Hartfield
Samuel Holyoke's anthem begins with a declamatory unison passage before opening out into rich SATB harmony. The text grapples with the paradox of Christian freedom: if God's grace is abundant, are we free to sin? The music rises to meet the rhetorical power of the question, driving towards the resolute affirmation that Christians are no longer slaves to sin, having been redeemed by Christ's sacrifice. This is a powerful expression of the doctrine of redemption, set with vigour and conviction.
