Hallowell by Barnabas McKyes — Lyrics

Psalmus David, filiorum Jonadab, et priorum captivorum. In te, Domine, speravi; non confundar in aeternum. In justitia tua libera me, et eripe me: inclina ad me aurem tuam, et salva me. Esto mihi in Deum protectorem, et in locum munitum, ut salvum me facias: quoniam firmamentum meum et refugium meum es tu. Tamquam prodigium factus sum multis; et tu adjutor fortis. Repleatur os meum laude, ut cantem gloriam tuam, tota die magnitudinem tuam. Ne projicias me in tempore senectutis; cum defecerit virtus mea, ne derelinquas me. Quia dixerunt inimici mei mihi, et qui custodiebant animam meam consilium fecerunt in unum, dicentes: Deus dereliquit eum: persequimini et comprehendite eum, quia non est qui eripiat. Deus ne elongeris a me; Deus meus, in auxilium meum respice. Confundantur et deficiant detrahentes animae meae; operiantur confusione

About Hallowell

Barnabas McKyes sets a powerful Latin text from Psalm 71, originally attributed to the sons of Jonadab and the first captives. The words express a profound reliance on God, seeking refuge and deliverance from injustice, and a lifelong trust from youth onwards. McKyes’ setting for SATB voices moves between Latin and English, weaving the psalm’s pleas and affirmations into a deeply personal declaration of faith and hope. The music reflects the earnestness of the prayer, offering a rich texture for the choir that builds towards a concluding expression of praise and glorification. This is a resonant sacred work, drawing on the strength of ancient scripture and adapting it for contemporary choral forces.
