HAIL MARY by Johnpaul Chukwujekwu Okwor — Lyrics
About HAIL MARY
"Hail Mary" by Johnpaul Chukwujekwu Okwor is a gentle, flowing choral setting of the Church's most beloved Marian prayer. Written in a moderate 3/4 time, the music carries a natural, waltz-like sway that feels both reverent and deeply comforting to sing. It is the kind of piece that settles a congregation into a space of quiet devotion, making it a wonderful choice for May and October devotions, or as a meditation during Communion on feasts of the Blessed Virgin.
What makes this arrangement special is how the different voice parts interact with the familiar words. In the opening, the sopranos lead with the angelic salutation, but as the piece moves into the first verse, the alto section steps forward to carry the line "Blessed is the fruit of your womb," while the other voices echo the holy name of Jesus. This subtle trading of the melody keeps the choir engaged and brings a conversational, communal feel to the prayer. The song concludes with a beautifully layered, repeating "Amen" that brings the piece to a peaceful close.
