About Haec Dies

Healey Willan was a leading figure in twentieth-century Anglican church music. This motet, Haec Dies, is a powerful setting of two verses from Psalm 118, interspersed with a jubilant Alleluia. The text rejoices in the day the Lord has made and gives thanks for His everlasting mercy. Willan’s SATB setting alternates between homophonic and imitative passages, creating a rich and celebratory sound. The interplay between the Latin incipit 'Haec Dies' and the familiar English text enhances the gravitas and solemnity of the work, making it a fitting anthem for Easter or any festive occasion.
