Heinrich Schütz's setting of Gross ist der Herr und hoch gepreist, SWV 145, opens with exultation for the city of God. The text, drawn from Psalm 48, celebrates Mount Zion as the foundation of universal joy, and the great King's city. Schütz’s SATB setting is a powerful testament to the majesty and permanence of God’s dwelling place. The music moves through scenes of earthly kings assembling in wonder and confusion, before returning to the awe-inspiring might of God, who has founded his city for ever. This is a potent and dramatic exploration of divine strength and steadfastness, sung in German.
