GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS by William M. Runyan — Lyrics
About GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS
"Great Is Thy Faithfulness" is one of those foundational hymns that instantly settles the heart of a congregation. Based on the words of Lamentations, it does not ask God for anything new; instead, it simply rests in the assurance that God’s mercy and provision are constant. When the choir leads this piece, you can often hear the whole church join in, especially on the refrain. It is a song of deep comfort, reminding us that through every season of life, God remains unchanging.
In our parishes, this hymn finds a natural home during Thanksgiving, Offertory, or as a reflective Communion piece. The verses build a beautiful progression—moving from the unchanging nature of God the Father, to the witness of the sun, moon, and stars, and finally to the deeply personal gifts of pardon, peace, and strength for tomorrow.
Musically, the steady, rolling rhythm gives the choir a chance to sing with rich, warm harmonies. The refrain, "Morning by morning new mercies I see," is a powerful crescendo of faith. It is a piece that does not need to be rushed; singing it with gentle conviction allows the profound truth of the lyrics to minister to both the singers in the loft and the people in the pews.
