About Great is the Lord, and with great praise
This setting of Psalm 48, verses 1-9, opens with a declaration of the greatness of God and the joy of his city, Mount Zion. The text describes kings gathering and being astonished, troubled, and overcome with fear as they witness God's power. It then shifts to the enduring foundation of Zion and a plea for God's mercy within his temple. The Latin text, a psalm for the Sons of Korah, is presented alongside an English translation, making it accessible for choirs singing in either language. John Smith's setting for SATB voices is a sacred work, fitting for a hymn of praise and reflection.
