Gratitude by Alexander Gillet — Lyrics

Alleluja. Dilexi, quoniam exaudiet Dominus vocem orationis meae. Quia inclinavit aurem suam mihi, et in diebus meis invocabo. Circumdederunt me dolores mortis; et pericula inferni invenerunt me. Tribulationem et dolorem inveni, et nomen Domini invocavi: o Domine, libera animam meam. Misericors Dominus et justus, et Deus noster miseretur. Custodiens parvulos Dominus; humiliatus sum, et liberavit me. Convertere, anima mea, in requiem tuam, quia Dominus benefecit tibi: quia eripuit animam meam de morte, oculos meos a lacrimis, pedes meos a lapsu. Placebo Domino in regione vivorum.

About Gratitude

The opening words express profound gratitude for divine deliverance from peril. The text, drawn from the Psalms, speaks of being surrounded by the pains of death and the snares of hell, yet calling upon the Lord to save the soul. It recounts God's mercy and justice, and how He has preserved the vulnerable and freed the singer from death and tears. The music is set for SSTB choir, and the text is sung in both Latin and English. This sacred hymn offers a powerful message of trust and thankfulness in the face of adversity, celebrating the Lord's benevolent protection and ultimate salvation.
