About Gratia vobis
This sacred motet for AATB voices sets a Latin text drawn from the New Testament epistles, conveying a fervent prayer for peace and spiritual preparedness. The words begin with a traditional apostolic blessing, invoking grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age. The latter part of the text continues this theme, pleading with the God of peace to equip us in all good things to do His will, making us pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ. Cipriano de Rore’s setting captures the devotional character of the text with rich, imitative polyphony, characteristic of Renaissance sacred music.
