About Gloriar mi posso io donne
Philippe Verdelot’s secular Italian madrigal Gloriar mi posso io donne is written for SATB choir. The text expresses the singer’s pride in a beloved whose virtues – noble lineage, loyalty, gentleness and wisdom – make her an object of envy. He feels he would be wrong not to love her so ardently, and prays that his love will be returned, so that he may be entirely hers, as he already feels himself to be. Verdelot’s music captures the text’s confident, yet tender, avowal of love, typical of the sophisticated Italian madrigal tradition.
