Melchior Franck's Gloria Patri is a substantial sacred motet for a large nine-voice choir (SSAT.SATTB). The Latin text is a powerful affirmation of the Trinity, praising God the Father as creator, the Son as redeemer, and the Holy Spirit as sanctifier. It moves to a doxology, extolling the indivisible Trinity and attributing to it eternal praise, honor, blessing, clarity, gratitude, virtue, and strength. Franck's setting, with its antiphonal possibilities within the nine parts, allows for a rich and resonant exploration of this profound theological statement. The composer skillfully handles the extensive vocal forces, creating a moving declaration of faith.
