Gloria, Old Hall 9

The Gloria text is a soaring declaration of praise to God, sung at the beginning of Mass. Nicholas Sturgeon’s setting, for three male voices (tenor, tenor, bass), captures the profound reverence and joy of the text. The music unfolds with a sense of majestic unfolding, moving from the initial acclamation of glory to heaven to the earthly peace granted to humankind. The composer clearly relishes the opportunity to explore the rich harmonic possibilities offered by the text, particularly in sections like ‘Laudamus te’ and ‘Gratias agimus tibi’, building towards the final, powerful affirmation of the Holy Trinity.
