About Gloria, Old Hall 7
This setting of the Gloria by John Cooke, from the Old Hall Manuscript, is for three male voices (ATT). As a complete setting of the Gloria text, it would have formed part of a larger Mass setting. The music unfolds with a rich, homophonic texture at the opening, establishing the solemnity of the praise directed to God in excelsis Deo. Cooke masterfully employs imitation and varied vocal combinations throughout, allowing the text's expressions of adoration, supplication, and awe to shine. The Latin text moves from the exalted praise of God's glory to the humble confession of Christ as Lamb of God, imploring mercy and the acceptance of prayer. The work concludes with the affirmation of the Trinity and Christ's supreme divinity.
