About Gloria, Old Hall 4a
This is an early setting of the Gloria, part of the Mass Ordinary. The text begins with the angels' proclamation to the shepherds on Christmas night, and continues with a hymn of praise to God the Father and God the Son. The composer is anonymous, but the manuscript dates from the early 15th century, placing it within the rich polyphonic tradition of the period. This setting is for three voices: alto, tenor, and bass. It is a substantial setting of the text, offering a contrapuntal texture suitable for liturgical occasions in Advent, Christmas, or feasts of the Lord.
