About Gloria, Old Hall 1
This setting of the Gloria, from the Old Hall Manuscript, is a prime example of English sacred music from the late medieval period. Scored for three voices – alto, tenor, and tenor – it draws its text from the Ordinary of the Mass. The music opens with a clear, declamatory statement, quickly developing into intricate polyphony. The composer masterfully shapes the text, moving from the opening praise of God in excelsis to the profound reverence of "Laudamus te" and "Adoramus te." The homophonic sections provide moments of powerful emphasis, while the contrapuntal passages illustrate the flowing praise and supplication found in the "Gratias agimus tibi" and the "Agnus Dei." The work concludes with a strong affirmation of the Trinity and God's eternal glory.
