About Giovane bella
Andrea Gabrieli's Giovane bella is a five-part madrigal for SATTB voices. The music opens with careful attention to the text, the upper voices in particular painting the words. It soon develops into richer harmonic textures, with imitative entries and flowing melodic lines that celebrate the beauty of the subject. The Italian text, a secular poem, praises a young woman, comparing her to pearls and describing her beautiful features. It urges her not to let sadness cloud her heart, for her charm and grace are so profound that even love itself has placed all its virtues within her sweet smile. This is a refined and expressive example of Renaissance part-music.
